Stars Shine At BET Honors

The annual BET Honors was held this weekend at the Warner Theatre honoring African Americans for their contribution in Literary Arts, Entertainment, Music, and Service.

This year's honorees included the Tuskegee Airmen,  for which the movie Red Tails is based, winning BET's 'Service' award. Stevie Wonder won the 'Musical Arts' award, while the 'Literary Arts' award went to poet Maya Angelou.  A deserving Spike Lee won BET's media arts ward, while Mariah Carey (new mom and wife of Nick Cannon) won the (wait for it) 'Entertainer' award.  ( I guess Beyonce just didn't work hard enough this year).  Award-winning track and field coach Beverly Kearney was recognized for defying the odds and teaching her athletes they can overcome their circumstances with perseverance.

The Honors saw everyone in the entertainment industry from a young Willow Smith to musical icon Stevie Wonder. America's First Lady Michelle Obama also made an appearance reminding us all, especially as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to provide service to others.  Mrs. Obama also presented Ms. Angelou with her BET honor.

The event was hosted by actress (and girlfriend of NBA's Dwayne Wade) Gabrielle Union.  This was Union's fifth year hosting the event.

Performances on the night were provided by rapper Common, the newly engaged Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, and the always amazing Patti LaBelle.

The 2011 honorees were Cicely Tyson, Jamie Foxx, Lonnie Bunch and Herbie Hancock.

This year's award will air during Black History month on February 13th at 9 pm.

Howard Hires Hannah-Jones

Nikole Hannah-Jones reminds us all why HBCUs were created in the first place. (July 7, 2021) -  Howard University offered an olive branch to Jones when her own alma mater, the University of North Carolina, chose not to offer this great talent in journalism a tenured professor position. [ Alumus Ta-Nahisi Coates  joins Howard roster] ICYMI, Jones is the creator of The 1619 Project, a documentary that chronicles the early institution of slavery and its role in shaping the Americas we know today. Source: The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The Project has garnered both acceptance and criticism. Those who support the vision understand that the truths about slavery have, throughout American history, been either whitewashed, or not taught at all, diminishing the roles and treatment of the African nations who built it. Slavery, in all fifty states (including the ‘stateless’ District of Columbia) built an economic powerhouse infrastructure that caused the United State...
