Dr. Sidney Ribeau , president of Howard University to leave esteem post, writes letter thanking esteemed educational institution. Dr. Ribeau is the 16th President of Howard University and the sixth African American to serve as its Chief Executive Officer. He was President of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, Ohio, for 13 years before coming to Howard. Under his leadership, BGSU was recognized for its residential learning communities, values-based education and innovative graduate programs. The school has faced budget constraints for years. What To Do, What To Do... About Violence In Our Communities

As the number of gun related crimes continue to rise across the country, the question, again, remains what do we need to do about it? More than 313 deaths this summer alone in Chicago's South Side, 13 injured recently during an all out assault on employees at Washington, DC's Navy Yard, movie theaters unsafe, people shot dead nightly on America's city streets, yet applications for gun permits reach all time highs. Gun violence, a lot like the issue of homelessness in major cities, is a pervasive social problem, seemingly with no solution.  Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu offer up recommendations during a visit last week to The National Press Club . NBCI Locates Nearly Sixty Thousand Complaints Against BB&T Among African Americans in the Southeast

Phase 1 has ended. Phase two begins in 30 days. National Black Religious Broadcasters Joins Boycott Black Church: Stop doing business at BB&T     The National Black Church Initiative, a coalition of 34,000 churches representing 15.7 million African American churchgoers, located 32,587 complaints against BB&T Bank throughout the Southeast United States. The findings, both surprising and shocking, are part of the first phase of a seven year boycott against BB&T Bank. The complaints alleged unethical behavior, unnecessary fees, online banking trickery, bad loans, rude personnel, and overall uneasiness concerning white personnel towards black customers. We plan to aggregate these findings and file them online over the next two months so the public can appreciate the breadth and scope of why NBCI has taken this extraordinary effort. We also plan to speak with state regulators in Georgia, Virginia, Florida, and throughout the southeast to publicize the findings...

One-Stop Shopping for D.C. Residents Looking for Jobs at Norton Job Fair

    On   Wednesday, August 21, 2013, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will hold her annual Jobs Fair at the Washington Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.     Norton will open the Job Fair with an hour of workshops, helpful to people looking for jobs or changing jobs   Says Norton, "DC and this region has more openings than anywhere else."   Speakers will offer tips on federal jobs available despite the sequester, on top job openings in the region, and on resume writing and interviewing in today’s job market.    After a brief dress for success fashion show, the job fair will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and will feature more than 80 employers with federal, state, local and private-sector jobs, and jobs for recent graduates.    The job fair is free, but open to D.C. residents only.  Job-seekers must bring proof of D.C. residency (photo ID, voter registration card, p...

Former Presidents to Attend 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter will join President Barack Obama to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the historic March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ’s “I Have a Dream” speech in in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 2013. Obama, Clinton and Carter will deliver remarks at the Let Freedom Ring Commemoration and Call to Action event at the Lincoln Memorial.   Three of the five pictured presidents will attend the 50 th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, August 28th. Monday's White House press briefing started out with press secretary Jay Carney telling reporters how he spent his weekend.   After telling reporters he hoped their weekend was good, he offered an unsolicited take on his own. "Since you asked", joked Carney who described his weekend as "great" and "unbelievable", "I had a great weekend". "I took my son to see Paul McCartney Friday night", Carney said, calling the experience "fantastic". "It’s just a fantastic experience because he’s amazing and his songs are amazing, but to be there with an 11-year-old who also knew all the words is pretty special." WASHINGTON, DC WELCOMES DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY’S 51ST

National Convention Expected to Generate More Than $73.7 Million in Economic Impact for the City   Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the single largest African American women’s organization in the country, will convene in the nation’s capital for their 51st National Convention, July 11 – 17. Attracting nearly 40,000 members, the week-long convention is expected to generate more than $73.7 million to the local economy. The Obamas Recognize Decatur House and Four Little Girls

When you talk about "karma", items coming "full circle", or the saying "what goes around comes back around", you can appreciate the historic visit by Michelle Obama to the DC's Decatur House, just a short block from where the first African American First Lady of the United States resides.   First Lady Michelle made a stop to the historic home where former slaves built, worked, and lived to deliver an endowment to the preservation of the historic landmark.   First Lady Michelle Obama speaks with children during a Decatur House visit.
