2013 BET Honors

BET held its annual BET Honors awards show last evening at the historic Warner Theatre where excellence at its best was the theme of the evening.

The network honors African Americans who excel in their chosen fields.

After last year's Honors featured an appearance by First Lady Michelle Obama, the 2013 honorees include former WNBA great and US Olympian Lisa Leslie who took home the honor for Athletics, while artist and performer Chaka Khan was honored with the award for Music.  Clarence Avant, known for the godfather of Black music won the honor for Entrepreneur of Year.  Avant, known for brokering several multimillion dollar music deals, said while accepting his award, "I make do speeches, I make deals."

Touche, Mr. Avante.  Touche.


TD Jakes, pastor of the Texas mega-church The Potter's House, took home the honor for Education while actress Halle Berry rounded out the honorees with her award for Service for her work with several charities, among them one that assists female victims of domestic abuse.

The event was hosted by the lovely Gabrielle Union and funny man Anthony Anderson.

Performers on the evening honoring the awardees included Erica Badu, Ledisi and Mint Condition.

The event will air on BET February 11th at 8pm.

Busy month for BET as the network will host the BET Inaugural Ball January 21 at 9pm at the National Portrait Gallery - 8th & F Streets (near Verizon Center).

DC Affordable Housing Realized?

 From the Office of DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser (Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated the opening of the Todd A. Lee Senior Residences at Kennedy Street, a 38-unit, all-affordable senior community located in the Brightwood Park neighborhood of Ward 4. All 38 apartments are for residents who are 55 or older and earn no more than 50 percent of the area median income. “The Todd A. First Family Attends Zion Baptist Church

The First Family attended the historic Zion Baptist Church today in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The church was founded in 1864 by African Americans who migrated to Washington from Fredericksburg, VA and is currently pastored by Rev. Keith Byrd, Sr. who employed the congregation today to "be a source of hope." Dr. King's 'Letter From a Birmingham Jai l' was recited to the parishoners while the Sunday program featured a picture of Dr. King on the cover along with the words "I Have A Dream". The First Family is known to visit area DC churches.  Churches the First Family have visited in our area include the 19th Street Baptist Church, Allen Chapel A.M.E., Metropolitan A.M.E.
