In this episode of DC Cops Gone Wild (Again), video evidence shows a metropolitan police officer punching a restrained man in the face and mid section – several times- for allegedly selling drugs and having a gun.
The department claims they are doing what they can to keep
guns off the streets.
We know that DC has had multiple incidences - this summer - of gun violence, car jackings, shootings, and deaths. However, is beating a person in the face while the perp is handcuffed the way to get guns off the street? Was the alleged weapon checked to see if it was illegal, or assumed to be illegal? (Are white people with guns treated this way?)
This latest incident is reminiscent of the Baltimore cop who punched a man in the face nearly one year to the day that DC officers stood and watched their colleague punch an unarmed man this weekend. The attack was so gruesome it prompted @dcpolicedept to tweet: “Where is the worldwide outrage now?”, possibly referring to the worldwide outrage George Floyd received at the hands of murderer Derrick Chauvin.
In a press conference after the DC incident, viewers were fed the proverbial textbook response of, ‘the actions of those police officers are not in line with our training, tactics, nor the rules of our department… ."
Question!!!?
Were the officers given the memo? Because if the practice of
pulverizing citizens (i.e. 3-on-1 combat while restrained, i.e. punching citizens like they're in an Erol Spence vs Manny Pacquiao vs Adrian Bronner fight) on the street isn’t in the training, it sure happens a LOT
for it not to be part of the training.
WATCH: Policing in 'other' communities.
As for the ‘where is the worldwide outrage now?’ sentiment,
excessive force at the hands of DC cops may not spark worldwide outrage, but
residents of the city where it goes down most have BEEN sounding the alarm.
Maybe the police captain’s (or the mayor’s) office isn’t paying attention, or hearing
the alarm of its residents they claim to want to protect, but if you’d like to
voice your concerns over DC cops going wild we suggest letting them be known by
writing police chief Robert
Contee at robert.contee@dc.gov, for starters.
Hopefully, he won’t wait until another video goes viral before
he lets his officers know that their behavior is disgusting, unwarranted,
inhumane, will NOT be practiced anywhere, and definitely not in the District of Columbia.
